Science Docent Program

This nationally recognized high school program teaches high school students how to develop and teach hands-on, standards based science lessons to elementary school students. During the school year, high school students develop and teach six science lessons, participate in 20 hours of community service and attend career conferences.

The program:

Encourages career exploration and increases the number of students entering the teacher pipeline.
Increases elementary students’ interest in science at an early age.
Provides elementary school teachers with enhanced science lessons and encouragement to improve their own science lessons.

Currently, this program is implemented in the following High Schools:

Brea Olinda High School (Brea, CA)
Estancia High School (Costa Mesa, CA)
Gertz-Ressler High School (Los Angeles, CA)
Kennedy High School (La Palma, CA)
Magnolia High School (Anaheim, CA)
Trabuco Hills High School (Mission Viejo, CA)
Western High School (Anaheim, CA)

Implementation Calendar

September 2007 – June 2008 
Students develop and teach science lessons, participate in community service and attend career conferences.
Recruit teachers from local high schools and elementary schools.

Jan – April 2008
High School Students submit application forms for college scholarships.

May - Jun 2008
Student and teacher evaluations are summarized and reported to partners. Participating students, and teachers are recognized.

July – August 2008
Teachers participate in Professional Development Institute.
