Heninger Elementary School
Santa Ana Unified School District
“The students at our schools today are digital natives, who will use technology in all aspect of their lives." —Mr. William Skelly, principal
Program Description
Mr. Skelly believes that the uses of programs like The Mind Institute, an innovative visual approach to learning math concepts, and Lexia, a powerful level-based literacy program give students the opportunity to utilize technology in problem solving, and as a personal tutor. Computer access to all students as well as understanding of basic applications and use of cyber resources has helped Heninger increase test scores by promoting individual learning.
At Heninger, students use the technology in a variety of ways: as a personal tutor, a tool for creating projects, and as a vehicle for acquiring new knowledge. Students are supported with better access to learning through using a greater variety of technology tools such as ELMOs, projectors, and audio-enhancers. Students understand the power and multiple uses of technology and how it promotes individual learning.
The use of school technology at Heninger is layered, using a multi-tiered approach designed to use technology to assist with learning by providing targeted interventions and learning programs in language arts, math and technology. Mr. Skelly believes that Heninger students have become more engaged learners because of its strong technology program, and that it is a model for schools across the nation.
What is the role of K-12 education in driving Orange County’s economic competitiveness?
Students in our schools today are digital natives, and must have access to 21st century technology. We understand that in order to compete, the 21st century learner must be able to use the computer as a tool in all types of jobs; it is not a choice, but a requirement.
