Program Description
Susan Groff has continually sought to broaden and challenge her curiosity by pursuing opportunities and programs that enhance her skills and provide science students with current research and authentic labs. She has participated in programs through UC Irvine, and Amgen Corporation to acquire materials, supplies, training and support for the implementation of labs within the classroom. As a result, her freshman biology and sophomore anatomy and physiology students have had the opportunity to perform specialized labs for the past two years.
Students understand the process of science through experimental design, performance of experiments, and the collection and analysis of quantitative/qualitative data, and have shown improved performance and comprehension.
Each year, the curriculum is modified to provide students with relevant and active lessons to improve comprehension and spark an interest in science. Students are performing and designing experiments using model organisms and comprehending homologous genes and their relevance to scientific research. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to explore the genuine resources and collaborative efforts of scientists using a variety of media to supplement instruction.
What is the role of K-12 education in driving Orange County’s economic competitiveness?
Fortunately, our region has the potential to form exceptional partnerships to support and reinforce science, math and technology. I believe educators have a responsibility to provide students with the knowledge and skills to be academically competitive, scientifically literate citizens, who make informed decisions and have the preparation to access the workforce.
