Award: Innovative School Program
Mariposa Elementary School
Brea Olinda School District
“My vision is to bring the world to Mariposa by using technology to create a classroom without walls.” Dr. Helene Cunningham, principal
Program Description
Dr. Cunningham believes that use of technology is imperative for Mariposa students to succeed in the 21st century. Through a systemic effort that involves students, staff members, and parents, the entire Mariposa team creates a shared vision for the integration of technology across all curricular areas.
As a result of this effort, sixth grade students discuss books they read with students from around the world and authors via videoconferencing. Third grade students learn about the Native American culture from a teacher located at another school site.
All students take piano lessons in the new Roland Music Lab; these lessons are aligned to grade level curriculum and result in creative expression as well as improved reading and math comprehension.
Classrooms have internet access and are equipped with the latest technology including laptops, LCD projectors, DVD players, Promethean Boards and student response systems so that teachers can facilitate meaningful, real-world lessons that engage students in their learning.
As a result of technology initiatives, student progress towards proficiency of academic standards has increased, and students have gained valuable 21st century skills. These innovations have created a new excitement for learning among all students.
What is the role of K-12 education in driving Orange County’s economic competitiveness?
Educators are responsible for providing a “cutting-edge” environment to connect students to the rest of the world. Through the use of technology, educators can create opportunities for problem-based learning, service learning projects, and global connections; which will challenge students’ thinking, drive their intellect and accelerate learning. This foundation will prepare students to drive the businesses of our future.
